Butterfly School

Butterfly School

San Pablo, CA

This project was created prior to Lili by our people when with another firm.

A biophilic schoolyard where nature, learning, and play converge. Inspired by the natural world, the design weaves the colors, patterns, and forms of nature into a built environment that strengthens the human-nature connection—colorful, engaging, and rooted in regenerative ecology.

Butterfly School reimagines Lake Elementary School—a long-ignored, land-locked campus in the east San Francisco Bay city of San Pablo, CA—in desperate need of a teardown and rebuild. In collaboration with the architects, the overall design approach for key campus architectural features was envisioned, and all external themes and programming were developed to meet practical needs while providing evocative and provocative education and play experiences. Inspired by the natural world, the design weaves the colors, patterns, and forms of nature into a built environment to strengthen the human-nature connections that we all desire and need. Grounded in Biophilic Design, the campus is colorful, engaging, and inspiring — leaning toward certification as a Green Schoolyard. Native plants and regenerative ecologies teach about the natural world, with habitats for migratory birds and butterflies woven throughout. Learning gardens and outdoor classrooms across the campus offer edible foods and multi-sensory experiences, so that learning, playing, and simply being in nature sparks curiosity, creativity, collaboration, and social connection. The campus is organized around a Front Door + Main Street sequence. Signature yellow canopies mark the administration entry and shelter the outdoor lunch courtyard, while a butterfly garden anchors a sculpture and bench at the heart of the campus. A network of outdoor classrooms, quiet nooks, mounded lawns, and a public path invite exploration, and a rain flume and chain with educational signage about the water cycle makes natural systems visible to students. Butterfly School stands as a model for how a public schoolyard can become a living, regenerative landscape—one that nourishes curiosity and community in equal measure.
